Client: Payroll Company Project: Enterprise Reporting Services The Challenge: A billion dollar company specializing in payroll & HR outsourcing wants to offer a new online reporting service for its customers. A business intelligence environment needs to be developed for this capability. Data must be available in near real-time.
Our Solution: Partnering with the firm’s data architecture team, we start by defining the overall BI architecture to operate in. This includes developing a set of data standards, design principles and operating procedures. We then design and construct a central data warehouse and subject-area data marts using Microsoft’s SQL Server platform. Data is delivered to the customers in the form of Business Objects reports. Customers can now login and run their own reports immediately after a payroll run completes. The system has been very profitable – over 400 customers have signed up for this new service.
Client: ERP Software Vendor Project: Customer Master Data Management The Challenge: An industry-leading ERP software vendor would like to better manage their customer information. Customer records are store disparately across several systems. There is a high degree of duplication, discrepancies, and even multiple definitions of “customer”. The lack of a single consolidated view makes marketing research and customer support difficult, time-consuming and/or inaccurate.
Our Solution: Create a master reference database for customer information. We implemented an Oracle database to act as the single authoritative source-of-truth for key customer attributes, complete with common business definitions. To minimize disruption and development costs, existing systems using customer data continue to operate as normal, but an automated process is put in place to reconcile customer records when changes are made. A simple java-based GUI provides end-user access and reporting. The company is now able to do focused marketing research around their customers while saving time and money.
Client: Financial Services Company Project: System Assessment for IT Stabilization The Challenge: An international financial services company has developed a system to purchase, manage and securitize residential mortgage-backed assets. Overall the system has been meeting their needs but making enhancements was becoming more time-consuming and difficult. There was not a lot of system documentation or well-understood ETL processes. No data models existed. There were also cases of data “gone missing”. The system was becoming less efficient and more costly to maintain.
Our Solution: Data Experts was brought in to assess the situation. Before we could make any recommendations for improvement we needed a better understanding of their current environment. Data Experts inventoried and documented all system processes and data. We developed data models that corresponded to production databases and implemented change control procedures. The end result was a set of documentation that told the whole story. Our final analysis and recommendations were implemented resulting in a more proficient and accurate system.
Client: Healthcare Company Project: Diabetes Registry The Challenge: Physicians at a leading healthcare provider have a need to track certain clinical data for their diabetes patients. The doctors need this information to analyze their patient’s health as well as provide data for a community-based disease registry. The system must provide data in a timely manner and have robust reporting capabilities. Data mining applications could also be a possibility in the future. The healthcare company would also like this system to serve as a template for other disease registries.
Our Solution: Data Experts conducted a series of interviews and quickly realized the requirements were strictly analytical in nature. The ideal solution is a data mart integrated within their newly created business intelligence framework. We held JAD sessions to formalize and validate the requirements. A design was put together reusing existing data structures where applicable. ETL workflows and business rules were mapped out. The result is an efficient data mart consisting of several dimensional star-schemas tightly integrated with their central data warehouse. The physicians are now able to get the information they need.
